Lego Activity

Goals

Goals

  • To meet and interact with classmates
  • To study the idea of **process* and algorithm writing

You will be assigned at random to a team of 3-4. When joining your new group, introduce yourselves, and share: * Introduce yourselves, and share: * Name * Where you are from? * Where do you live on campus? * What courses are you taking this fall? * Share a “boring” or unexpected thing you are good at

Phase 1 (5 minutes)

  • Move to sit with your team
  • Introduce yourselves!
  • Examine your Lego model, pass it around
    • Do not disassemble!
  • Discuss shape as a group (what is its shape, what might it be for)
  • Learn as much about it as you can
    • Without taking it apart
    • Without taking notes
    • Without drawing or taking pictures

When time is up, return Lego model to instructor!

Phase 2 (5 minutes)

  • Build a copy of your Lego model from the parts provided
    • without the model
  • Work as a team, discuss your model When time is up, return Lego parts to instructor and discuss:
  • What worked for this model?
  • What was challenging?
  • What would you need to do better?

Phase 3 (5 minutes)

  • Examine your Lego model, again
  • Discuss it with your group
  • As a group, on paper, write instructions for building your model
    • Without taking it apart
    • Without drawing or taking pictures

When time is up, return Lego model

Phase 4 (5 minutes)

  • Move to join your new team
  • Introduce yourselves
  • Get instructions and parts from instructor
  • Build the new model

When time is up, return parts, and discuss: * What worked and what was challenging? * How useful were the instructions, how could they be made better?
